Comments From Attorney Brandan Davies On Clemency Granted To Chelsea Manning
Presidents almost universally grant clemency or commute the sentences of some prisoners on the way out of office. A president usually waits until the end of their presidency to avoid the political backlash of “going easy” on criminals. In my opinion this is an underused power of the executive branch. There are thousands of people that are serving lengthy prison sentences for drug crimes as a byproduct of the war on drugs. These people are just as deserving of a second chance or reprieve from punishment as Chelsea Manning or any other whistle blower.
