Employer Makes Thieving Employee Stand On Corner With Sign
When you steal stuff, and you get caught, there’s bound to be consequences. Since stealing is a crime, the consequences are often of a legal nature. For a 17-year-old employee of a Texas businessman, however, the options were to get an experienced theft lawyer and face criminal prosecution or face intense public humiliation for stealing from his employer. He chose the latter.
Hot pink shirt, matching lipstick, and a sign
In June 2017, Mark Anthony Doyle, who worked for construction business owner Brent Franklin, stood on a street corner in Texas and held up a sign that said, “I stole & lied to my boss. This is to keep my head right.” This he did while clad in a hot pink shirt with the words ‘I Don’t Want To Be Here Love’ printed at the front, with a matching pink lipstick to boot. The whole thing was streamed on Facebook Live, and tens of thousands of social media users have already seen the embarrassing video.
According to Franklin, Doyle stole one his Rolex watches, a big-screen TV, and other electronic equipment while he was out of town. He also allegedly withdrew hundreds of dollars in cash using Franklin’s company debit card. Doyle also made it worse by lying about his misdeeds. Franklin has since recovered the stolen items.
Franklin could have easily filed criminal charges against Doyle, but he decided to offer his employee a chance to redeem himself without sending him to jail and ruining his life. Franklin was there the entire time Doyle stood on that street corner with the clothes and the sign, making sure he showed his sign to passing motorists. He also gave Doyle a break every 45 minutes and kept him hydrated.
Punishment approved by parents
In a separate Facebook Live video, Franklin also revealed that he approached Doyle’s parents and grandmother for permission to punish him, and he got the green light for it.
The stunt, however, was not without critics, many of whom pointed out that Doyle’s young age and the humiliating nature of the punishment. Franklin, however, was defiant, saying he would have done the exact same thing if Doyle was his own child. Incidentally, Franklin is single and doesn’t have kids of his own.
Despite everything that happened, Franklin stated that he won’t be pressing charges against Doyle and that he intends to keep him as an employee as long as he stays on that street corner for the next two days to serve out his humiliating but relatively lenient punishment.
It was a somewhat amusing sight to behold, considering Doyle’s larger than usual masculine frame in a decidedly feminine get up. At the same time, it was a sobering reminder that young people who make mistakes like these don’t have to be necessarily punished with jail time. Far too many kids have faced criminal prosecution and jail for the pettiest of offenses and had their lives ruined in the process.
If you or a friend is facing theft charges and the complainant is not as considerate as Brent Franklin, you are going to need the services of an experienced theft lawyer to represent you in court.
